Would never ever buy a Golf again. When travelling folded, the roof vent surrounds are rubbing on the rear roof section - rubbed thru paint onto alloy. Due to the crushing weight of the new panels (with new strong factory-metal springs) the owner wanted to start with four each 75 pound force springs because the (bathroom scale) measured weight of 30 pounds at the end indicated that 100 pounds of force was needed at the point of application. What was missed is that the force when compressed is not 75 pounds. It raised based on the design characteristics of the gas spring to as much as 50% higher. So where she needed 200 pounds to raise the roof panels--she was seeing 225 pounds with the initial installation. That is why you see these panels rise on their own! Easy job. Dougwe, yes the upgraded chassis/suspension would be a minimum I think also, and I did have a look underneath and agree that the axle is still a bit low. I finally finished the job this morning, went with original quoted size of 3/4 inch (nearest metric) as the degraded foam had compressed. Govt. http://www.avanwa.com.au/ , The foam is mainly to keep out dust, insects, draughtetc. Another thing to consider is the nylon strips you can also buy which help your panels slide over each other when closing the roof down and putting up etc, they wear or come off after awhile too and adding extra bits certainly help with the lifting by stoppingthe aluminium edging from sticking. Sorry to hear about it, but it was the cheapest way they built the van in the cheapest possible way same with the suspension it's lousy if you want to go off road a little bit but for the rip I suggest put some the elastic banned around the winding knob to stop it from unwinding itself it could help when you shut it put elastic band closest to the base of the winder and that should help as it rattles loose on travel and slowly opens other than that you need to put latches on the outside off the Dome but you need somebody to do that. I get around 11L/100km with my 07 XT man towing my camper trailer but it is only 450kg fully loaded and sits lower than the A-Vans with less wind resistance. Make sure the Nylon (Polystone) guides are still in place at the end of the Top Roof Panel. The chassis/suspension upgrade and larger tyres would be a must have option I think. I've not seen an Avan roof, but I did have a HiAce with a pop top, and also a Kombi. Cruiser is the more compact length-wise; Cruiseliner features a large front storage boot allowing you to take away all your holiday essentials.
